Alta-1 Distinctive

At Alta-1 we recognise that adverse childhood experiences can impact a student’s sense of self-worth, motivation and capacity for learning, making engagement in a mainstream school setting difficult. At Alta-1 College, we help students overcome life challenges, unlock their potential and achieve their goals.

Through a highly relational, trauma-informed approach we address barriers to learning. Through fostering trust, respect and empathy, our students feel a strong sense of belonging which is vital to a student’s ability to engage in their education. Our staff collaboratively support each student's unique strengths and aspirations, guiding them towards their future pathway and recovery. By providing personal growth, skill development and diverse experiences, we empower students to envision and achieve a positive trajectory in life.

Alta-1 offers a variety of programs to suit engagement needs:

  • Campus programs are full-time and operate with a core team of 4 staff, offering a higher staff-student ratio than the average mainstream school classroom. Students require a reasonable level of independence and capacity for developing self-regulation strategies.
  • ConnectEd Program: This program assists students with complex engagement needs. This is largely a 1:1 approach with a focus on overcoming barriers to behavioural, social, and emotional success. The program seeks to prepare and support students as they transition to their next educational pathway. The program is not an online program as students will need to attend class once or twice a week.

Every program is designed to support a student's 'recovery journey'. A recovery journey is a commitment to change and a recognition of the need for support. It acknowledges areas within one’s self that require development in order to have a positive impact on their future and help set them up for success.

Our program addresses the impacts of trauma and aims to assist the student to acknowledge, confront and resolve areas of their lives that are barriers to their social/emotional wellbeing. Due to this unique focus, it is important that a student desires to engage with this core aspect.

A student that experiences success at Alta-1 willingly commits and desires to:

  • work with staff to create a safe place of belonging for themselves and others.
  • engage with our recovery program.
  • re-engage with schooling socially, emotionally and educationally.
