Caring for Youth At-Risk

The service began in response to the need for holistic services catering for at-risk youth who have unique needs. It is designed to educate and assist the young person in getting their life back on track. A small team of staff are chosen for each placement on the basis of experience and compatibility. The team works collaboratively with the Department for Child Protection and external service providers to ensure the needs of the young person are met to the highest standard.

The therapeutic model used in the service is relationally based and ensures that all aspects of the young person’s wellbeing and development are supported. The model consists of four main components: create the environment, set the boundaries, celebrate the young person’s success, deal with the drivers (events and circumstances impacting on the young person’s behaviour).

The delivery of this model is then shaped to meet the individual needs of each young person as we recognise that each is unique, requiring a range of strategies to maximise the potential for positive outcomes.

Once the young person no longer requires intensive residential care they will engage in the Alta-1 transition programme.  Alta-1 is working with the Department of Housing and Works to create appropriate housing for these young people to live in once they turn eighteen years of age.
